Job Title: Field Engineer - Automation and Controls Systems

Location: Anywhere between Boston, MA and Detroit, MI (Travel Required)

Salary: $100,000 to $150,000 per year (Depending on Experience)

Overtime: Available (Paid at Overtime Rate)

Our client is a leading provider of innovative assembly line solutions within the automation industry. They specialize in the design, production, and maintenance of high-performance automation systems that streamline manufacturing processes. Due to continuous growth, they are looking for a Field Engineer to join their team.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Field Engineer to support the maintenance and troubleshooting of automation equipment, specifically focusing on mechanical and electrical aspects of controls systems and assembly lines. The successful candidate will work across multiple sites located between Boston and Detroit, providing technical expertise and ensuring optimal performance of our client's assembly line systems.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to travel extensively (approximately 90% travel annually), gaining hands-on experience across a variety of manufacturing environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform on-site maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting for mechanical and electrical components of automated controls systems and assembly lines.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to customers to ensure efficient and safe operations.
  • Collaborate with local teams to implement system upgrades, modifications, and installations.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance and system checks to minimize downtime and maximize productivity.
  • Assist in diagnosing and resolving electrical, mechanical, and software issues on-site.
  • Create and maintain accurate service reports, documenting repairs, actions taken, and parts used.
  • Provide technical training to client personnel on proper operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Work closely with engineering and project management teams to ensure customer specifications are met.
  • Travel extensively between client sites in the assigned region (90% of the year).

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a Field Engineer or similar role in the automation, controls systems, or manufacturing industry.
  • Strong background in maintaining and troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems, including automated assembly lines and control systems.
  • Solid understanding of electrical circuits, PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), sensors, actuators, motors, and robotics.
  • Experience with troubleshooting and repairing industrial equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical schematics, wiring diagrams, and mechanical drawings.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and best practices in industrial environments.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with customers and teams.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Familiarity with automation software (e.g., Siemens, Allen Bradley, Rockwell Automation).
  • Previous experience working in a field-based engineering role.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Electrical, Mechanical, PLC troubleshooting).
  • Experience with robot programming and maintenance.

Additional Requirements:

  • Willingness to travel 90% of the time, across a wide geographic area between Boston, MA and Detroit, MI.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to travel to client sites as needed.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
