JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary/Objective
This position will operate, monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot SmithFoods waste water treatment facility and its processes. Work involves responsibility for the technical aspects of plant operations, semi-skilled labor in the operation and maintenance; collection and documentation of samples for laboratory testing; and strict compliance with state and federal operating regulations.
Essential Functions
- Performs all aspects of sampling, monitoring and testing required to maintain compliance with Federal State and Local regulations governing the wastewater treatment process, and storm water and sludge management
- Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets lab results, meter readings and gauges, to make proper adjustments to operational procedures to maximize treatment efficiency of incoming wastes and sludge processing
- Maintains logs, records, files and reports related to treatment plant operations and testing.
- Maintains treatment plant equipment, systems and facilities. This includes housekeeping tasks to keep the facility clean and orderly
- While maintenance is primarily the responsibility of the operator, he/she must have the ability to communicate with departmental leaders to accomplish larger and more complicated tasks
- Communicates with regulatory officials
- Schedules and directs outside contractors
- Specifies and purchases necessary chemicals and equipment to facilitate plant operations
- Collaborates with production associates to assess and maximize waste reduction at the processing facilities
- Provides end of shift reporting in order to keep all areas abreast of daily treatment plant operations
- Researches, plans and coordinates implementation of new technology / equipment / systems to enhance the efficiency and capacity of the treatment plant
- Provides remote monitoring of facility and on call support to respond to emergencies and breakdowns
- Other duties as assigned

- Participate in cross-functional teams as required to advance the business interests of the company
- Compliance with all company and regulatory policies/guidelines relating to associate safety, food safety and food quality
Competencies
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, volumes, area, detention times, and parts/million
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
- Possess a basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems. Ability to trouble shoot systems and perform minor maintenance and plumbing tasks
- Working knowledge of motors, pumps, blowers, and mechanical equipment is necessary
- Electrical knowledge, including 3 phase, is required.
- Will operate tow motor.
- Familiar with laboratory equipment and common practices
- Must possess excellent time management, organization skills, accuracy and attention to detail
- Self-starter who requires little supervision
- Willingness and proven ability to learn new systems and processes, undergo training and evaluate and implement process improvements
- Able to attend meetings and trainings
- Must be insurable by company standards
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment with shifting priorities and multiple deadlines
Supervisory Responsibility/Reporting and Working Relationships
- Reports directly to the Sr. Group Leader Maintenance
- Works closely with production, engineering and maintenance
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an associate to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Physical: Sufficient physical ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting; standing and walking for prolonged periods of time; climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and operating motorized equipment.
- Treatment plant environment; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, solvents, electrical energy, toxic materials, hazardous chemicals and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work in or with water and/or wastewater in confined spaces; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
- 5 days/week (40-45 hours per week)
- Flex-time available as coordinated with manager and department (Core hours apply)

Education and Experience
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of Class 1. OEPA Wastewater certification or the ability to acquire one within a year of employment
- Specialized training in water/waste water treatment plant operations
Preferred:
- Minimum 1 yr. experience in operation on waste water treatment plant
Travel
- Limited to no travel is expected for this position
