Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is seeking a Senior research professional to join the Strategic Energy Group in the Energy and Resilience Center (ESR). Come join a team that conducts research & analysis on the impact of the energy transition on strategic energy security. We support U.S. and international partners in pursuing clean energy and our work informs decisions by developing and analyzing future scenarios that answer challenging and complex questions about how energy production and use may impact decisionmakers' interests.

The candidate should have national and international collaboration experience on developing studies, analyses, best practices, standards and/or publications related to hazards and resilience as it relates to energy.

The job responsibilities for either level include:

  • Leading and contributing to analytic reports
  • Interpreting results, and communicating outcomes for reports and presentations both internally to NREL stakeholders and externally
  • Develops solutions for significant, unique, or complex problems that consistently require a high level of creativity and where analysis of

    situations or data requires an in- depth evaluation of intangibles.

    Uses a mastery of specialized techniques and may develop multi-disciplinary solutions for state-of-the-art problems.

    Serves as an authority in technical decision- making and direction at directorate level.
  • Project coordination with internal and external teams
  • Researching, acquiring, organizing, and analysis of qualitative and quantitative information.
  • Collaborating with analysts & researchers across NREL in modeling and analysis
  • Writing and publishing of results of analyses in technical reports and executive summaries written for lay audiences
In addition to the above, the level V researcher is expected to:
  • Lead a research portfolio of projects or large and/or multi-institutional projects and interdisciplinary teams, including objective setting, planning, execution, project funding, budget management, reporting, stakeholder engagement and leadership briefings. Authors seminal research products that often obtain far-reaching and influential impact within the engineering
    or scientific or social science communities.
  • Advocates for research projects, programs, and strategies by communicating
    the impact, accomplishments, and needs to senior level stakeholders and
    partners internally and externally.
  • Frequently serves as a technical leader, role model, and mentor in the laboratory and externally within their field of research.
  • Regularly seeks and secures project funding to cover self and increasingly larger teams.
  • Builds national, multi-disciplinary, or intensely focused teams and serves as a technical resource and mentor to communities external to the laboratory.
  • Represents and can negotiate laboratory participation in large, national and/or international projects.

Basic Qualifications
Researcher IV- Relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience . Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Excellent leadership, communication, problem solving and project management skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Researcher V- Relevant PhD and 9 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 12 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 14 or more years of experience . Applies advanced scientific technical principles, theories and concepts. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Considered a national subject matter expert. Demonstrates leadership in a number of areas, including all team, task and/or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated management of complex and/or impactful projects. Excellent technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance. Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE O 472.2A for additional information.
  • Professional experience working within DOD
  • Advanced level research skills including reading reports, creating clear syntheses, and extrapolating impacts into the future. Experience with scenarios.
  • Advanced communication including experience working with high-profile clients and stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications
  • Several (7+) years of DOD experience.
  • DOD experience in the Indo-PACOM or EUCOM regions
  • Operational energy, exposure to DOD operations and international partnerships (NATO and others) on topics including interoperability, foreign operational environments, and operational energy
  • NATO or other DOD partner engagement

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Researcher IV / Annual Salary Range: $95,500 - $171,900

Job Profile: Researcher V / Annual Salary Range: $114,500 - $206,100

NREL takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee's salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
