Job Summary: The Pathology Assistant (PA) provides essential support to pathologists by performing gross examination and dissection of anatomic specimens, including surgical and autopsy tissues. The PA is responsible for the preparation, handling, and documentation of these specimens, ensuring accurate and timely analysis. This role requires a high level of precision, technical skill, and adherence to safety and compliance standards.
Key Responsibilities:

Gross Examination: Perform gross examination and dissection of surgical specimens under the supervision of a pathologist, ensuring accurate identification and sampling of tissues for diagnosis.
•
Specimen Preparation: Prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination, including selecting, trimming, and processing specimens according to established protocols.
•
Documentation: Accurately document findings, including gross descriptions, measurements, and any special procedures performed. Ensure all records are maintained according to regulatory and institutional standards.
•
Laboratory Coordination: Work closely with the pathology laboratory staff to ensure the efficient processing of specimens, including labeling, storage, and transfer of tissues.
•
Quality Control: Participate in quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results. Identify and report any discrepancies or issues.
•
Mentorship: Assists with training and teaching of PA students and grossing techs in complicated cases.
•
Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols and maintain compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations, including HIPAA and OSHA standards.
•
Communication: Communicate effectively with pathologists, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate and timely reporting of findings.
•
Continuing Education: Stay current with advancements in pathology and laboratory techniques through ongoing professional development and training.
Qualifications:
•
Education: Bachelor's degree in Pathology Assisting OR a related field from an accredited program.
•
Certification: Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as a Pathologists' Assistant (PA) is preferred.
•
Experience: At least 1-2 years of experience in a pathology laboratory setting, including experience with surgical and autopsy pathology. New graduates with relevant training may also be considered.

Skills:
o
Proficient in gross examination and dissection techniques- Required.
o
Strong knowledge of anatomy, pathology, and laboratory procedures-Required.
o
Be fluent and familiar with Dragon One Medical Dictation Software- Preferred.
o
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
o
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
o
Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
o
Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic medical records (EMR).
Physical Requirements:
•
Ability to stand for extended periods.
•
Ability to lift and handle specimens and equipment as needed.
•
Manual dexterity for handling delicate instruments and tissues.
Working Conditions:
•
Exposure to biological specimens and hazardous materials.
•
Work in a laboratory and clinical environment with strict adherence to safety protocols.
